With its moody interior and muted lighting, as you descend the steps into Caretaker, you will find yourself transported to a New York style Speakeasy – a unique spot for a cocktail in Auckland’s bustling CBD.
Bamboo criss-crosses the ceiling, to soften the conversations and laughter of those indulging. Dark timber walls are slung with smoked mirrors, adjoining expanses of pressed black metal panelling.
Sinking into one of the leather couches, a friendly waiter approaches you.
But there’s no menu at this establishment…
Rather, the waiter has a quick chat to find out what sort of drip is tickling your fancy tonight. Before long, they return with a custom-made cocktail specially catered to your taste.
On this particular night I had a hankering for something fruity and sour, while my counterpart was craving something creamy and sweet.
The team at Caretaker were quick to oblige our requests, and returned with a pair of attractive cocktails that tasted as good as they looked.
With its clever combination of textures and dark, moody tones, the underground bar has a special way of making you feel cosy and relaxed.
Though we only had time for a quick stop-over before dinner, it would be easy to lose track of time here, slowly sipping your Friday night away.
Everything at Caretaker is fresh and perfectly curated.
It's an intimate space, perfect for small groups of 6 or less, where they offer a wild range of classy potions created in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th century.
If you intend to visit - as you should - note that Caretaker don't take reservations. They work on a FCFS basis... so go on just pop right on in.
