An introduction.

Housed in a renovated cinema complex in the heart of the popular coastal village of Whangamata is a restaurant whose philosophy embodies more than just a dining experience.

Let me introduce you to Barend and Rowan, two talented individuals from different parts of the world, who we find working together in this wonderful new restaurant  – Camina.

We've known these two fascinating characters for well over a decade (and potentially two) - separately - in unrelated, potentially diametrical contexts. Imagine our delight to discover their journeys had somehow converged, and they are working together, creating delicious flavours and spreading happiness to a stream of enthusiastic patrons, both resident and visitors, like us, in Whangamata.

Check out the story on their website and read on.

Rediscovering tradition.

Imagine this...

Camina is a place where the ageless ritual of gathering around a fire is celebrated and where the journey of food is valued as much as its flavour.

As you might imagine, the people behind Camina, primarily accomplished Chef Barend and irrepressible frontman Rowan, are as unique as the restaurant itself.

Their concept is simple: to rekindle the connection between humans and the elemental force of fire; honouring this timeless method, flame-cooking their meals, infusing each dish with a smoky essence.

They have created a rewarding dining experience in a space that resonates with their love for culture, art, and the shared experience of a meal.

The menu is a canvas on which the freshest ingredients from New Zealand's land and sea are painted with the colours of fire.

The menu is mouth-watering, to say nothing of the considered wine list. Each dish is prepared with a blend of local produce and traditional techniques.

From the Lady Butcher charcuterie, grilled cabbage with labneh, harissa chicken, and the beetroot, fennel, and burrata salad to the stunning picanha, every bite is a testament to the chef's dedication to flavour and innovation.

The interior of Camina is a blend of beauty and simplicity.

The warmth of the décor invites diners to relax and enjoy good company and great food.

There are a range of spaces to dine inside and some bar space outside, but the best seats in the house are the six stools at the bar that face directly into the cooking space. That's where the fire happens.

We were fortunate to sit at the bar and it was worth it.

Needless to say we enjoyed an incredible meal and a memorable experience.

Thanks guys.

A wee note: seasonality is a factor and bookings are essential.
